Jil Sander: blast from the future

There's something different about Raf Simons' composition for the Jil Sander spring 2012 collection. It's dark for a start, darker then what we expect of a spring / summer collection. And perhaps it's the plastic outerwear or wetter-than-wet hairstyles the models wore, but it's hard to look at this collection and not get a sense that it belongs in some form of a dystopian future where it rains incessantly; a future where the air is thick and muggy. Not a future that will actually occur of course, but one as we might have imagined it some decades ago. For this Jil Sander collection takes so many of the elements of menswear in the 20th century, amalgamates and accentuates them, and then offers them up for 2012.
